Walnut Canyon

We walked through 800-year-old dwellings that were lined along a steep canyon near Flagstaff, Arizona. Over millions of years the canyon walls were eroded and the Sinagua Indians saw roofs in the overhanging limestone. They built walls with dried mud and chunks of rock, leaving room for tiny doors and holes for the smoke from their fires to escape. Some walls were still layered with streaks of soot. It was an eerie journey through time, trying to see through the eyes of a dead culture so opposite my own.
